Sega has many arcade hits in their 30 years in the Videogaming market, from Hang On, Outrun, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, and their most recent hit, Crazy Taxi. Based on the Naomi arcade machine, this is was one of the hottest arcade games since Fall 1999. Most people wondered if Sega will bring the game to the Dreamcast. And at the Tokyo Games Show, Sega answered their prayers by announcing the game for release around February.
I loved the arcad version of the game, everytime I went to my local mall, I would go to the arcade center to play this game. Sometimes I had to wait in line for a chance to play the game, sometimes the machine was empty. But one thing's straight, everyone thought the game rocked. Without a doubt, this was the most played game at the arcade center. Don't think this was the only good game at the arcade center. People preffered playing this over, Tekken Tag Tournament, Soul Calibur, Marvel vs. Capcom, House the Dead 2 and Power Stone.
I got the DC version the day it came out, on February 2, and I don't regret it. The game is arcade perfect, with a whole new course and about 9 mini-games. Sega got all the licenses from Levi's, Fila, Tower Records, and some other companies. They even added the Offspring and Bad Religon music during the gameplay like on the arcades.
The gameplay is sort of like Driver, but instead of picking up criminals and driving them to their location, you pick up a defenseless citizen who just wants to go places. Well, actually, they may be defenseless, but they sure got a mouth. Well, anyway, there's more to it then just picking up the citizen taking her to her location. You have to do this in a certai about of time, and through heavy traffic. You can even go over ramps, buildings, run on the subway tracks, over the grass, and beach.
In the game, you'll have a chance to pick from three different drivers, Axel, a green haired guy who drives a 60's classic Caddilac, B.D. Joe, a funky guy who has a big mouth, and drives a 60's Pontiac. Also, Gena, a cool & sexy girl California girl who drives a small European car. Then there's Gus, a 42 year old guy who thinks he's cool. But he's more like a pimp daddy, and drives a 30's Packard.
Sega has added another full course adding to the original course from the arcade. Sega of America says the courses aren't based on San Francisco, but after playing the game you could see its San Francisco with little changes. Both courses are extremely long, with tons of different paths. In each city, there is a lot of traffic, sometimes for no reason, the cars will crash. Sometimes, I think the 18 wheelers block my path on the highway. The bad part is most of the passengers always ask to go to the same places over and over again. So, instead of picking up the passengers, I just kept riding around, and I found tons of new paths.
In the game, there are 3 playable modes, Arcade, Original, and Crazy Box. Arcade mode has the course from the arcade machine. You can choose from playing with the arcade rules, play for 3 minutes, 5 minutes or 10 minutes. Original mode has the new track, and you can choose from driving using arcade rules, play for 3 minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. Crazy Box is the mini-game mode, it comes with 9 different modes. From, Crazy Jump, Crazy Flag, Crazy Ballons, Crazy Drift, Crazy Turn, Crazy Bound, Crazy Dash, Crazy Rush, Crazy Jam and Crazy Pole. Each mini-games has a different object.
Crazy Taxi is an instant Dreamcast hit, and is a must buy game. After buying the game, I was reading the inside book of the game in the mall, when I guy walks by me and says, "Hey, you bought that game too?!" The EB were I bought the game doesn't really sell a lot of Dreamcasts and DC peripherals. So a guy coming up to me and saying that shows how much its selling. This game will appeal to anyone, this is probably one of the hottest games for any system at the moment.
