If your wondering why I'm doing arcade reviews, its mainly because there are a lot of good arcade games out there that probably won't come out for the Dreamcast. I'll only be covering games made by Sega, games running on a Sega machine, or a game that will maybe come out for a Sega system. But its a different story for this game, its mainly because Blockbuster doesn't have the game yet, so I thought I just go out and review the arcade version. This game is Dead or Alive 2, the sequel to the hit arcade/Saturn game Dead or Alive. The DC version was released a few days ago, and most major sites were able to get their hands on this game to give it a review. I thought its better if I keep up with them.
Dead or Alive 2 is probably the best fighting game that's going to come out this year. Personaly I think its much much better then Tekken Tag Tournament (based on the arcade version). I'm not sure what board the game is running on, but I know that the board is made by Capcom. The graphics on this game can easily rival Soul Calibur, and in some places its much better than Soul Calibur. One place where Soul Calibur didn't do very well was the background graphics on the stages. It was a bit blury, but DOA 2 has amazingly detailed stages. But still, Virtua Fighter 3TB has the best looking stages.
The layout of the buttons is very simple, and easy to use. Each player has the basic analog pad, and three buttons, "kick", "punch", and "free". I have no idea what "free" was, but I kept pressing it. It seemed to be working, I almost beat all the characters in the game until I met Hulk Hogan look-a-like Bass.
There are three modes on the arcade version, Single, Versus, and Tag-Team. Single is playing by yourself, trying to beat all the fighters. Versus is when your playing with a 2nd player, whoever wins will continue to play fighting against other fighters. Tag-Team allows each player to pick two fighters, and after one fighter dies, the other fighter comes in. Tag-Team is my favourite, because sometimes both fighters can team up against one of your oppenants.
Dead or Alive 2 is a very good fighting game for the arcades, personally my second favourite arcade fighter. I still think Marvel vs. Capcom is a very good arcade fighter. Check your local arcade center to see if they have Dead or Alive 2, if they do, you have to play it. Most arcade fighters usually have the high punch, kick, low punch, kick, and all these other buttons. But Dead or Alive 2 has 3 basic buttons which are very responsive. If they don't well then try to rent Dead or Alive 2, or even buy the game. Its a very good game to have, I'm pretty sure guys will like this game.
