Ubi Soft is a big
supporter of the Dreamcast even though
all of their games never do well. They
just keep pouring in the games. Evolution
will probably change all of that since
its the first RPG for the Dreamcast
outside of Japan. A lot of people have
been asking for a RPG for the Dreamcast.
Evolution was launched just before
Christmas, it was perfect timing.
Evolution wasn't a success like Soul
Calibur or even Hydro Thunder, but it was
in the top 10 in Dreamcast games for the
month of January.
Evolution has been
mistaken by some as the a Digimon RPG.
But it isn't a Digimon RPG, although I
wished it was. Evolution is based on a
cartoon in Japan and is nothing like
Digimon.
Evolution is based
around one character, Mag Launcher. Mag
and his friends Linear and Chain go relic
hunting in dangerous dungeons. There are
tons of wierd looking creatures like a
Polar Bears, and other odd animals.
Unlike other RPG games, the Evolution has
little character interaction. It mostly
concetrates on the exploring the stages,
and fighting the enemies. Mag and his
friends must try to avoid the enemies,
and find collect items, and finally
battling the big boss. One of the cool
things is that, just before you battle
the boss, you can go back to town, get
full power and get back fighting the
boss.
The fighting system
when fighting big bosses is very cool.
The dungeons are very well detailed, and
layed out. When you fight the boss, the
camera automatically zooms into the
fight. Each of the characters, Mag,
Chain, and Linear have their own regular
attacks, use of items, and special
attacks. You'll have a limited amount of
special attacks, so you'll have to use
them wisely and try not to waste them on
the same boss. The fighting system also
shows the order of attacks of your
character and the boss. This shows who's
going to attack next. The combination
moves shows off the great graphics. This
is some game.
Evolution is a great
game, I really wasn't expecting a lot
from this game. The cool graphics,
amazing fighting system, and the overall
pure fun. The next RPG for the Dreamcast
will be Time Stalkers (Climax Landers).
Time Stalkers is a very anticipated game,
and I can't see how this game can top
Evolution. I hope Evolution 2 comes to
North America by the summer.
