Sega has only made two
indy racing games in its history, the
first was Yu Suzuki's Virtua Racing. The
other is Flag to Flag on the Dreamcast.
Virtua Racing came out in 1991 on the
Genesis, and was the first game to ever
prove that polygons aren't only for
computer games. It was a hit at that
time, since it was 3D racing. People were
amazed to see great graphics on a 16-bit
console. When the Dreamcast was launch in
Japan, Sega gave indy racing games
another shot. Super Speed Racing (was
renamed Flag to Flag in North America)
was released on the Dreamcast, but wasn't
really a big hit. They gave the North
American market another try, making a few
graphics changes. But again, Flag to Flag
failed in North America. But hey, very
few indy racing or formula 1 games have
ever been called a hit.
When I first played
the demo version of the game on the
Generator disc, I was amazed by the
graphics. The replay was amazing, so I
gave the game a shot and got the full
version. I was expecting the normal
things I would expect from any indy
racing game, fully licensed drivers,
teams, and circuits. Flag to Flag passed
that test, it comes with all the 18
drivers, 19 tracks, and all the CART
teams. Also, after finishing the
championship mode, you'll get pace cars
to drive around like the Acura NSX.
There are three modes,
Arcade, Championship and Super Speed
Mode. Arcade allows you to player two
player split-screen or one player single
track. Also allows you to choose any
driver, and track. Championship mode is
probably the best part about the game.
You'll be able to pick a driver, and use
him for the rest of the CART season.
Which includes racing around 19 tracks in
a order. You'll be able to change the
aero dynamics, fuel amount, suspension
and so one. This mode also allows you to
do pit stops when needed. You'll be able
to pick your damage control and weather.
Super Speed is a hidden mode, you'll have
to finish the Championship to get this
mode. It simply mixes both Arcade and
Championship mode together. You'll be
able to choose a driver and track like in
the Arcade mode. Then you'll be able to
pick the damage and weather like in
Championship mode.
There are a lot of
positive things about this game,
including the great AI, the amazing
graphics and replay. AI is very
competitive, unlike in Monaco Grand Prix,
its not so easy to pass the leader, then
keep up the lead. If you make a small
mistake, the oppenants will take
advantage of it. Another good thing is
the graphics, its very detailed. When
playing with the weather cloudy or
raining, its looks very similar to NFL
2K. When it rains, the amount of detail
is amazing. Try the game at with the
weather at rain, it looks so cool. I'm
pretty sure Visual Concepts helped out
with the U.S. version. The replay is very
realistic, it looks like the real thing.
The camera angles are very good, and gets
all the good parts of the race.
This game is probably
one of the most underrated games on the
Dreamcast, I think this game deservers
better. But there were some negatives,
like the damage area. I put the damage
control on arcade, and it stil damages
the car with a small nudge. Also, when
the speed of the car goes very high, its
very hard to turn. But still, I recommend
this game to any CART,IRL, or Atlantic
series fan.
