Midway is probably the
largest North American supporter, having
4 games ready at launch. The boxing hit,
Ready 2 Rumble, arcade hit Hydro Thunder,
NFL coin-up hit NFL Blitz 2000 and the
last MK game, Mortal Kombat Gold were the
games Midway published for the Dreamcast
so far. You can expect Midway to bring
much more games for the Dreamcast, after
the company recently announcing a 45%
increase in sales. Ready 2 Rumble, Hydro
Thunder and NFL Blitz 2000 were big hits
on the Dreamcast, all three games came in
the top 30 in sales.
Hydro Thunder was a
big arcade racing hit, the game is a mix
of Jet Moto and Nascar put together.
Jumping off 500 feet stunt ramps, and
racing against other powerboats. This is
probably one of the best racing games out
there on the Dreamcast. The DC version is
arcade perfect with some hidden add-ons.
Hydro Thunder is
packed with tons of different tracks from
different parts of the world. 11 large
tracks, with huge ramps, tons of powerups
and so on. Race on these tracks with 13
different powerboats. Hydro Thunder is a
very entertaining game, with realistic a
phyisics engine. Jump of the ramp at 200
mph get the powerup and blast past your
oppenants at 30 frames per second. 30
frames per second doesn't seem like much
compared to Sonic Adventure or Soul
Calibur, but the graphics are very
smooth.
The gameplay in Hydro
Thunder is split into 4 gameplay modes,
Easy, Medium, and Hard and 2 player.
You'll start off with 3 easy tracks and
boats to play with. Finish in the top 3
and you'll get a chance to play with 3
medium tracks and boats. Finish in the
top 2 and you'll be able to play with 3
more new tracks and boats. After
finishingthe top 2 in Difficult, you'll
get 2 hidden tracks, and 4 hidden boats.
There one bad thing about this, I've
played a lot of racing games and most of
them are very easy to learn. But with
Hydro Thunder, its very hard to move on
to the next set of tracks and boats. By
the time, you find out how to beat a
certain track, you'll get bored of the
game.
This game is
considered one of the best racing games
for the Dreamcast, and I agree. Unless
you liked Jet Moto, I truly don't
recommend you buy this game. Rent the
game and play two player mode with your
friends. It'll be a lot of fun. There are
far better racing games that are more
entertaining, like Crazy Taxi, Sega Rally
2, and Speed Devils.
