Midway's Mortal Kombat series has been around longer than the Street Fighter series. The first version of MK came out in 1992, and it was a big hit. But it also started the big arguement about blood and gore in videogames. The SNES version took away the blood cheat in their version, but in the Genesis version, the blood cheat was still found. No wonder the Genesis version outsold the SNES version. At the time MK I came out, I was a cute little 7 year old in the summer of 1992. I was also a boy who watched too much tv, and had really bad nightmares. Anyway, I bought the game and I played it for probably 10 hours each day. I didn't know much about the blood cheats until the next year, when one of my friends gave me the code.
It really didn't make a big difference, the gameplay was still the same, except with a little blood spilling out. I prefered playing with the blood, because it looked pretty cool. In 1993 also saw the release of MK II, probably the most successful out of all the MK games. Two years later, MK III came out, and that was also considered very successful, but I have yet to play the game. Next year, MK Trilogy came, it really didn't see much of the success, I haven't played this game either. Next year, saw the release of MK IV, it sold, but not very well. It came out for the Playstation, and it was actually the first time I saw a 3D fighting game. It looked pretty cool, well now comes MK Gold for the Dreamcast. And yes, I have played this game, why else would I be righting this review?
The whole Mortal Kombat series has had everything from movies (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II: Annilation), a tv series, action figures, comics, and of course videogames. The tv series still continues, MK II: Annilahation was probably the last movie, the action figures and comics stopped back around 1995, and MK Gold will be last MK game. Well what about Mortal Kombat: Special Forces? Well, that game got cancelled after producer Ed Boom left Midway.
Why am I doing this review for? Oh, yeah, MK Gold, that's right, back to the game. MK Gold is an arcade perfect version of MK IV with extra fighters, and stages. Well, actually, MK Gold is exactly the same thing as MK IV, but with upgraded graphics, added fighters and stages, and some changes in the fighting system.
First of all, all I have to say is this is probably the worst of all the MK games. Its just so boring, this game should been put to rest long time ago. There are 3 playable modes, Arcade, Endurance, and Team. There is also, an Options mode, and a Cheats mode, which can only be opened by entering the cheat.
Mortal Kombat Gold usually stays at 60 frames per second, and time to time it will dip to 30 frames per second. In the game, there are 13 3D backgrounds, and 20 fighters, some from MK II.
When I was playing the game, I got really bored very quickly, I don't know why I rented this game. I could've rented Rippin'Riders and given you a review for that game. Gameplay is very boring, it really doesn't give you the action like other fighting games. I've played Soul Calibur on the arcades, and it gives you a sense of excitement. Power Stone gives you the excitement with the interactive 3D worlds. Marvel vs. Capcom gives you the excitement with the hyper comboes, and fast paced fighting. But with Mortal Kombat Gold, there's no sense of excitement, fast paced action, or interactive worlds. Also, this game is very hard, the character just come after you as soon as the announcer says fight.
Overall, I consider this the worst game on the Dreamcast, probably on the worst games I ever played. Don't spend a penny playing this game on arcades or Dreamcast, don't even rent this game. There are far more better games out there, like Soul Calibur or Power Stone, or even the upcoming Dead or Alive 2. But if you liked MK IV, still don't go for this game, its exactly the same thing. Rent or Buy Virtua Fighter 3: Team Battle, now that is a good fighting game.
