The Sonic franchise is
probably one of Sega's most successful
series and probably one of Sega's best
kept secret. Meanwhile Nintendo announced
the release of the SNES, Yuji Naka and
the Sonic Team were busy working on a
mascot for Sega. Sega kept the secret
about the game, while Nintendo kept
bragging about the SNES. At the time,
Genesis sales werent' really very good.
Sega was expecting big things from the
release of Sonic the Hedgehog in the
summer of 1991. Sonic the Hedgehog sold
hundreds of thousands copies. At the end
of that year, Sega controls 55 percent of
the videogaming market. While Nintendo
controlled 40 percent, and other 5
percent controlled by Atari, Panasonic,
Commadore, etc.
With the huge success
of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega continued to
make more Sonic games. Since then, every
Sonic game made by the Sonic Team was
considered a big success. So what's going
to change Sega's mind in making another
game on the mascot for the Dreamcast?
At the Japanese
release of Dreamcast, Sonic Adventure was
probably one of the best games. This game
was actually considered for the Saturn,
to get the system back on track. But when
Sega told Sonic Team they're working on a
128-bit system, Yuji Naka considered
making the game for the new dream machine
instead.
One of the interesting
things about Sonic Adventure is being
able to play with 6 characters. Each with
a different story line that come a cross
the other characters. Sonic Team has
added 4 of the original characters,
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Also, 2
new characters, Big the Cat and E-102
GAMMA. The two new characters probably
have one of the best gameplays, after
Sonic. With Big the Cat, you'll have to
go fishing looking for your friend
Froggy. With E-102 GAMMA, you'll have to
shoot the enemies, mostly puppets of
Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles. Off-course,
Sonic has the best gameplay, and the
longest gameplay. Tails is probably the
easiest character to finish, while
Knuckles is my favourite character to
play with. I think the Sonic Team
could've worked on Amy's character. After
finishing with all 6 characters, you'll
have to finish the with Super Sonic.
Unlike in other Sonic games, there is no
code to get Super Sonic from the
beginning.
Another cool thing is
the adventure fields, there are three
totally different adventure fields,
"Station Square," "Mystic
Ruins," "Egg Carrier."
Inside each adventure field is the action
stages, this is the part where you
actually play for rings, fishes,
emeralds, and frogs. With each character,
you'll have to finish each action stage
three times to get the three emeralds.
There are also 5 fun mini-games, from a
racing game, snowboarding game,
sandboarding game, shooting game and so
on.
I'm not really a big
Sonic freak, I've only played 5 of the
Sonic games. Well, six including Sonic
Adventure, and if there's one thing I can
tell your its that Sonic Adventure is
totally different from all the other
Sonic games.
I would consider Sonic
Adventure the best Sonic game ever made.
The gameplay is a lot of fun, with three
huge, and I mean huge adventure fields.
The mini-games make Sonic Adventure even
more fun. If you liked most of the other
Sonic games, you'll love this one.
Unfourtunatly, people aren't interested
in games like Sonic anymore like they
were in the early 1990's. People today
would prefer games like Soul Calibur,
Tomb Raider, and RPGs. But I would love
to see Sega keep making more Sonic games.
People are less interested, but I'm sure
because of the whole Pokemon thing people
are getting more and more interested
games like Sonic.
