The original Sega Rally for the Saturn and PC wowed everyone with its great graphics and the excitement of playing the game. The game sold incredibly well, even though it only had 4 tracks and 3 cars. Nobody complained about it, the just loved the game. Sega made a sequel to their original and was suppose to come to the Dreamcast with online gaming. The Japanese versions came with online gaming, but unfortunatly since Sega of America and Sega of Europe didn't get the online gaming ready yet. So, Sega Rally 2 came without online gaming to North America and Europe without network play.
But there was some good news out of all this, Sega Rally 2 was to come with 20 different cars, and 17 different courses. Also, a chance to change the weather conditions, more realistic physics, smooth graphics, and multi-player modes.
In Sega Rally 2, there are 4 main modes, Arcade, 10 Year Championship, Time Attack, 2 Player and Battle. Arcade mode is the same thing you played on the arcades. Pick a car, and race against time in four stages. 10 Year Championship is the main mode in the game. It mixes arcade mode with some new things, every four stages in the game is one year and you'll have to finish 10 years. In this mode, you'll be able to customize your car, and select a transimision(automatic or manual). Every time you come in first place each year, you'll get a new car. The next modes are time attack and 2 player. Time Attack is like the arcade mode, but in a single race. I'm pretty sure you know what 2 player is.
The tracks on Sega Rally 2 are based around 6 areas, Desert, Mountain, Snowy, Riviera, Muddy and Isle. Also, Sega has added almost every car manufacturer who competes in the rallys. They include, Lancia, Ford, Suburu, Fiat, Toyota, Peugeot, Volkswagon, and many more.
Sega has totally changed the way the cars react compared to Sega Rally. Unlike before, shifting to a lower gear in a tight turn won't get you through the turn. You'll actually have to slow down. Sega has also added understeer and oversteer, meaning sometimes the car won't turn as much as you want or it turn too much. Sega has also added handbrakes so it'll be more easy to powerslide in the corners.
Most parts of the game very near perfect, expect for some areas. For some reason, the frames per second rate keeps dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps around he corners. I background music is very annoying, its not the racing music I prefer to hear. Also, I'm still a bit pissed off about the whole Network play thing.
Sega Rally 2 is the only real racing game that is actually worth buy out there at the moment. If you like games like Gran Turismo or if you liked the original Sega Rally, you'll love this game. But if your into Indy racing, better of getting Flag to Flag or Formula 1 World Grand Prix. Until Sega GT or Metropolis-SR comes out or Vanishing Point comes out, Sega Rally 2 is the only racing game worth buying out there.
