If there's one genre of games teh Dreamcast has been lacking its RPG's. Well, maybe in Japan, actually DC has been lacking quality RPG's in Japan. The only RPG's wroth buying in Japan are Evolution, Shenmue, maybe Black Matrix Advanced and the other game is the one I'm going to talk to you about in this preview. Its been over a year, and there is only about 10 RPG's in japan. The sad thing is the Japanes love RPG games. No wonder Dreamcast consoles aren't selling well in Japan. But that could soon change with the games like Phantasy Star Online, Eternal Arcadia, Sakura Project 2000, and Evolution 2.
This preview is going to be Time Stalkers (formerly known as Climax Landers is Japan. After delaying the game tons of times, Sega finally gave teh game a specific date, March 1, 2000. The game was released in Japan nearly a year ago. Time Stalkers was suppose to be a Dreamcast launch game under the Climax landers name. Climax Graphics, the develper had problems with the game programming when trying to bring to North America and Europe. Since then, Climax has added even more this to make the game look even more impressive.
In the game, you start of as a adventurer with a really bad hair do. Your caught in a time warp that sent you to a floating world. The people in the town think your the geat hero who has come to rescue them and return them back to their homes.
As you play through the game, you'll meet five other people who are going to help you rescue the helpless people. Each of the five people you meaet have their own special powers. Since the game's background include that different era's are put together in no pattern, thatis how Climax made each of the stages to look. Each quest is in to pattern. So, in one quest your in a futuristic world, the next quest your in an the modern world. Eaverytime you finsh a quest, a new piece of the puzzle will fall into place.
Lets hope Climax used a different camera system compared to the one in Blue Stinger. The camera system in Blue Stinger went all over the place, and I didn't know what was happening in the game.
The gameplay is very similar to Evolution. Searching dungeons, looking for things, killing the bosses and enemies.
Overall, Time Stalkers seems to be avery promising game. A lot of people I know who have a Dreamcast and love RPG's can't wait for this game. But, the graphics on the characters isn't very good. Something I noticed in all three games by Climax Grahics is the characters design is horrible. Blue Stinger's design was actually okay, but Time Stalkers and Super Runabout have very bad character designs. The background detail is amazing, but it doesn't fit in with the characters.
Evolution is still a very good game, probably even better than Time Stalkers. When fighting the enemies in Evolution its very complicated, but when you master it, its a lot of fun. But, the fighting system in Time Stalkers doesn't sound very sophisticated. I'll guess I'll have to wait and see which RPG is better.
